Francisco Clemente is a Hawaii-based artist whose mastery of woodturning and carving brings the beauty of Hawaii’s woods to life. Born and raised in Huelva, Spain, Francisco traveled extensively across Europe before settling in the U.S. and pursuing a successful career as a general contractor in Las Vegas. A vacation to Hawaii changed his trajectory, inspiring him to make the islands his home and dedicate himself fully to the art of woodcraft.
Francisco’s journey from contractor to artist began with a client’s request for round bedposts, leading him to teach himself woodturning techniques. What started as simple candleholders evolved into intricate turned boxes and abstract sculptures that quickly gained attention at local craft fairs and galleries. His work reflects a deep respect for the wood, allowing its natural form, color, and character to guide each piece.
Francisco meticulously seasons and dries his materials, sometimes for years, to enhance the unique spalting and rich tones of Hawaii’s diverse woods. His portfolio spans functional and artistic works, each complemented by finishes or surface textures that highlight the wood’s inherent beauty. Recently, he has introduced dyes and color treatments to elevate otherwise plain woods, constantly pushing the boundaries of his craft.
Francisco’s work resonates with Hawaii’s commercial clients seeking unique, handcrafted art pieces that celebrate the islands’ natural resources. His creations bring warmth and sophistication to spaces, offering a connection to Hawaii’s rich heritage and the timeless beauty of its forests.
